Political Cartoon # 6

This cartoon was drawn by Daniel Kurtzman and titled Haiti Devastation. It was published on politicalhumor.com for the week of Jan. 10-16.  This cartoon deals with the recent devastation of Haiti that was caused by a earthquake of historical strength for the area. The message of this cartoon is that Haiti has been destroyed and divided by the earthquake. Now that the country needs leadership the most, the government has failed their citizens. Haiti does not show any unity in the face of this crisis as brothers and neighbors are fighting each other for the aid that is so scarce. Haiti needs a new leader to bring the country back together again to recover from this disaster.

Personal Blog-Senior year

So far, senior year has been a bit of a rush. It's too bad that applying to colleges in Fairfax county is so competitive. When I talk to some of my friends in other areas, they always talk about what a breeze senior year is and how great all their classes are. But here, seniors feel the need to stack up the tough AP courses in order to look better for colleges. Most of my friends are taking at least a few APs and spend most of their time studying after sports practices.  Of course there are perks to being a senior, but right now I really just want it to be second semester and I want to know where I'll be headed next fall. 

Political Cartoon 1/08

This cartoon was drawn by Gary Wasserman and published in the Boston Globe on January 5th.  The cartoon shows that the state of affairs Obama was left with by Bush isn't the best.  He has a lot to deal with right now and is getting a lot of criticism for the ways he is dealing with it. However, these are challenges that were dropped in his lap as he began in a very hard time for America. I agree that Obama has had a lot to deal with from the very beginning, and it is all with no thanks to Bush.

Obama administration in the new year

I hope that the Obama administration will earn the faith of the american public by following through with more of their plans. I think they are going in the right direction, but the majority of americans have yet to see the effects.  The economic turn down is certainly not over but it does seem to be slowly getting better. Obama has approved a surge of 60,000 soldiers to Iraq.  Although he was criticized for taking too long to make his decision, he took the time to create a plan that he thinks is the best for the Iraq and Afganistan situations.

This cartoon was drawn by Ken Culotta. It was published by robsmithjr.com on December 18, 2009, titled Merry Christmas. This cartoon deals with the public losing their faith in Obama. In this cartoon, Obama is dressed in a santa suit with a child waiting on his lap.  There are many things that people expected to get, like children from santa.  They thought they were getting contracts, funding, jobs, and unemployment benefits. Since not everyone is seeing these benefits yet, they are beginning to stop believing Obama's plans. I recognize that this is happening with some people but I have not lost faith myself.

Favorite holdiday

My favorite holiday is Christmas. I love this holiday because me and my family always travel to my grandma's after celebrating Christmas morning at our own house. Part of what I love about this is that it remains the same wherever we live, we always go to our grandma's to meet up with all our family. We usually open one gift Christmas eve (pajamas) and then open the rest in the morning. Then we pack up the van and drive to grandma's. We always have a turkey dinner, play games, and do another gift exchange once we are there also. It's always a lot of fun to be with all my aunts, uncles, and cousins for a good week.

Political Cartoon 12/11

This cartoon was drawn by Alex Hughes and published on Tribune Cartoons. It is titled Yet to come and is dated 12/11/2009.  This cartoon deals with the issue of taxes. This cartoon depicts two "fat cats" of Christmas past and Christmas present celebrating the holiday with their large bonuses merrily. Meanwhile, the ghost of Christmas yet to come looms above holding a giant club ready to ruin the party. This means that while these wealthy people have been able to celebrate lavishly because of their large bonuses in the past, in the future they will be crushed with a "super tax".  I think most everyone would agree that the taxes to come will alter the way the wealthy spend their money.

Religious Symbols

I think religious symbols should be allowed around the holidays as long as they appear in moderation and don't seem to be forcing any ideas upon the public. Equal representation of various religions would probably be the best way to spread the holiday spirit without seeming predominantly one religion. Although some people view the display of religious symbols on public property to be going against separation between church and state, I think they contribute to holiday spirit as long as they are put up within moderation.
